What is the format of the course?

E-ROC is a case-based, interactive program that utilizes audio and video in a series of eight modules. The course actively demonstrates effective institutional review board (IRB) practices using a mock IRB meeting, and employs case studies to enable participants to translate new knowledge into practice. Progress checks and a final assessment facilitate understanding of the concepts.

What is the course content? And, does it cover issues relevant to both biomedical and social-behavioral IRB members?

The course consists of eight modules and covers the history of the IRB, the function and purpose of the IRB, how to analyze risks and benefits, subject selection and recruitment, informed consent, data safety monitoring, privacy and confidentiality, and IRB meeting dynamics.

The course features a variety of case studies relevant to the review of both biomedical and social-behavioral research protocols.

Is the content in E-ROC different than the content in PRIM&R's former online course?

The content is the same; the only difference is the learning management system. We migrated the course to the Moodle platform to improve the technical functionality of the program. But, in terms of the course organization, content, and flow, it's all the same.

Is there a separate review mode for users who previously completed E-ROC?

There is no review mode for E-ROC. Users are always able to access modules they previously completed throughout the duration of their license.

Are there printed materials associated with the course?

Everything you need is viewable online; however, all materials can be printed out if needed.

Who would benefit from taking E-ROC? Are there eligibility requirements to subscribe?

E-ROC is designed for new IRB members and new IRB staff members; however, course content may be useful for other professionals working in the field of human subjects protections seeking to gain insight into the role and function of the IRB. There are no prerequisites to subscribe to the course.

I live outside the United States. Will E-ROC still be a useful tool?

Many E-ROC users live and work outside the United States. E-ROC covers the United States federal government DHHS and FDA regulations. Thus, if you conduct research that falls under these guidelines, you will benefit from the course. In addition, since the course focuses on the general ethical principles underlying human subjects research, E-ROC would be a relevant, comprehensive educational tool anywhere this research is conducted.

Does the course have to be completed in one sitting? Or, can it be stopped and re-started?

The course can be stopped and re-started, may be accessed from any computer, at any time, and can be accessed at the learner's own pace. This format allows learners to incorporate ongoing education into a busy work schedule.

Do I always have to access E-ROC using the same computer?

No. You can access E-ROC from any computer, whether at work or home. The course doesn't require you to download anything to your computer, so you can access it wherever you have an internet connection and Flash Player 7 or later installed.

What are the technical requirements for taking E-ROC?

E-ROC is accessible via Apple, Windows, and Linux operating systems. All you need is to be connected to the internet, and to have Flash Player 7 or later installed. A comprehensive overview of the system requirements can be found here.

Approximately how long will the course take? Can I take it multiple times?

The estimated time to complete the course is 4.5 hours, and learners may access the course modules multiple times. The individual modules take between 15-45 minutes to complete. The estimated completion time is noted during the introduction of each module.

Can I earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) or Continuing Education (CE) credits by taking the course?

Boston University School of Medicine designates this Enduring material for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ (CME credits). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. All users who successfully complete the final course assessment receive a certificate of completion. Please visit the CME/CE page to learn more.

Is E-ROC eligible for Certified IRB Professional (CIP) recertification credit?

No, E-ROC is not eligible towards CIP recertification credit because the content of the course is fundamental in nature. E-ROC gives users the basic building blocks of the human subjects protections research landscape, which they can then build upon. It also gives those who are more experienced a refresher training.

Is it possible to preview a demo of the course before purchasing?

You can watch a webinar overview of E-ROC here. If you have specific questions, or would like to receive guest access to the course, please email us or call 617.303.1876.

How does the Institutional License work?

This option is available to institutions and has no cap on the number of users. The license is available on a pro-rated basis, and is valid from the date of purchase through the end of December 31, 2017. Please see the fees page for current pricing.

Is there a limit on the number of users who can access the course from an institution?

Institutions who subscribe to the course have no limit on the number of users who can access E-ROC.

If I purchase individual access to the course and then decide that I would like to purchase an Institutional License, is it possible to then apply the individual rate to the cost of the Institutional License?

Yes. If you purchase individual access and decide that you would like to upgrade to an Institutional License, PRIM&R will apply the cost of the individual rate to the cost of the Institutional License.

I'm not sure if my institution would be considered a single institution, or if IRB members at our organization might be considered to be employed by different institutions.

Institutions with multiple campuses/schools are required to purchase a separate license for each campus/school. However, PRIM&R recognizes that organizations are structured differently, and works with institutions on a case-by-case basis to determine whether they qualify for a single Institutional License. If you are unsure of whether your institution qualifies for a single Institutional License, please email us or call 617.303.1876.

Will the course be updated in the future, or is it a single, finalized product? If the course is updated, will there be a change in price?

PRIM&R will update the course if the federal regulations governing human subjects research changes. We don't have any plans to otherwise update the course in the immediate future, but if you have ideas for additional modules, we invite you to share them with us as we consider future directions for PRIM&R's educational programming. PRIM&R will review its fee structure if and when new content is developed for E-ROC. Information on current pricing can always be found on our website.
